0

Quilting supplies are the most important things you will need to create beautiful quilts. It has been said that, “you are only as good as the tools you work with.” This saying is so true when you are talking about quilting supplies. There are a few different supplies that you will definitely not be able to do without. They are the rotary cutter, rotary mat and rulers, sewing machine, iron and ironing board, fabric and paper scissors, cotton thread and fabric, design wall, seam ripper, and pins and needles. Without any one of these quilting supplies, you will not be able to complete your project.

What To Do

Now that you have found all of your quilting supplies, you will need to know what each one does. We will start with the rotary cutter. The rotary cutter is the first and most important of all the quilting supplies. Using this item will teach you how to get your quilting blocks cut quickly. The rotary mat and rulers are important because they help the rotary cutter. The mat prevents cutting another surface and the rulers help you to get you pieces straight and uniform. If you are not sewing the pieces together by hand, a sewing machine is the fastest way to fit them together. You will use this for straight stitches that allow for a ¼” seam. Once you have sewn the pieces together, you will need to iron them and this is where the ironing board and iron fit into the list of quilting supplies.

The final quilting item listed are important also. The fabric and paper scissors are not used very much. You may want to color code the two so you can tell which is which. Cotton thread in shades of grey will be all you need to start out sewing. These colors will match any fabric well. High quality cotton fabrics are a necessary quilting supply. Cotton is best to start out with and is durable. The patterns are also beautiful and diverse. A design wall is a great place to hold all of your pieces. Once you have sewn them together, pin them on a corkboard to keep them wrinkle free. Seam rippers are not a very popular quilting supply but, may be needed every once and awhile for taking out messed up stitches. Finally, pins and needles hold everything in place while you are sewing it all together.

Working Together

When you are talking about quilting supplies, it is essential to have all of the ones above on hand. As you can tell, you will, at some time need one or the other. It would be a waste of time to be in the middle of quilting and have to stop and run to the store for missing quilting supplies. Make sure you are prepared before starting your project and have all your quilting supplies close by.
